Although the person possessing the ball is important, creating a scoring opportunity will be almost impossible without the second and third players. To increase success and scoring opportunities, challenge yourself to plan on who you will pass to or who you might receive the ball from.
The second player is the first person that the dribbler passes to. Then, the player that the second player passes to is the third player. The third player is one of the most dangerous players because of the unpredictability of it. The defense might see the player make a run but you don’t pass it to them yet. The defense will let their guard down. Then, your player will be unguarded and in the perfect position to keep the attack going.
At your next soccer practice, try and predict those third-player opportunities. When you start to identify them, you can implement them into the game successfully. Also, tell your coach and teammates about this so they understand how they can also create and assist in second and third player passing opportunities. To practice this skill specifically, use these drills.
