In soccer, movement of the ball is key to winning games. Most of the time, you make a run in soccer to get into space. This is either to draw a defender or to create space for yourself. Regardless of the idea, making runs in soccer can help out you as a player, as well as your team.
There are two types of runs, the first is the standard run into space. This includes any run you make into open space. There are many types of runs into space. There are overlaps, a type of run where you overlap your teammate with the ball. Giving them another option to pass the ball. In addition to overlapping, there are direct runs and lateral runs. Direct runs are when you right straight at the opponent, hoping to get open forward. Lateral runs are when you run horizontally across the field. This is to widen your team, making it harder for the defense to defend each person.
Secondly, the sacrificial run is important too. This is meant to draw the opponent away from the player that you think should receive the ball. Many times, the defense wants to make sure that no one gets behind them. So running forward is a good way to draw the other team away from your players.
Great off-the-ball movement and making runs is key to becoming the next soccer prodigy. So be sure to practice making runs during scrimmages and games.
