Power and Finesse is a simple, fun, and beneficial drill used to improve your shooting. This drill can be turned into a game or played simply as a drill. Power and Finesse works on your ability to shoot the ball with power and with accuracy. It also helps with shooting while running and scoring under pressure.
Supplies:
- 5-10 balls
- At least 15 players
- 1 goal
Set up:
- Two teams set up between the circle of the goal and the penalty arc.
- The keeper steps into the goal.
- One person stands on each post.
Instructions:
- The people on the post will have the balls.
- One of them will roll the ball out and a player on one of the teams runs on to the ball and tries to score from farther away from the goal.
- Then, that same player will continue his run and the person on the post will roll another ball toward the player. The player will have to place the ball properly and low to the ground. The goalie will have to try and stop all shots.
- If the player misses all of the shots, then the player is removed from the game and must sit out. If the player only makes one shot, then the player returns to their line and is safe. Finally, if the player makes both of the shots, they can challenge a player on the other to try and make both of the shots.
- The challenged player must make both shots and if they miss both or just one, then they are out. Once a player completes their turn, it is the other team’s turn to shoot.
- The teams alternate turns until one team does not have any more teammates left. However, if a player shoots and hits the crossbar, then their entire team is able to come back into play.
Tips:
- Keep your ankle locked, toe down, and head down. Going against any of these tips can result in you launching the ball over the goal. To make sure you keep your shots on target, have the right technique and form (plant foot next to the ball, toe down, head down, ankle locked, and laces striking the ball, all with a proper follow-through).
- Play it safe, don’t always aim for the crossbar, as you have a chance of missing both shots and stepping out.
