The attacking combination drill is a perfect drill to work on your crossing, finishing, runs off the ball, and teamwork. As a fun drill, you and your friends, or team, can spend hours upon hours practicing. It’s important to practice drills like this because when near the goal, opportunities can be limited. So it is important to score or even get a shot on target each time your team attacks.
Supplies:
- 3 players
- 1 ball
- 1 goal
Set up:
- Two players stand where the arc intersects the penalty box.
- One player stands about where the penalty spot would be.
Instructions:
- The three players pass in the triangle.
- When the ball is coming to one of the players on the 18-yard box, they will yell “overlap.”
- The player next to them will start to overlap behind them.
- During this run, the player who yelled “overlap” will play the ball into space for their teammate.
- Once the overlapping player gets the ball, they will start to dribble to the end line.
- The player at the penalty spot will make a run to the front post of the goal.
- The third player will run to the back post.
- If the ball is on the ground, the player running towards the front post will tap the ball in the goal.
- If the ball is in the air and goes past the first player, then the player on the back post will head or kick the ball in the goal.
Tips:
- Make sure your passes are firm and perfectly weighted. Although there is no defense, in a game there will be and it’s important to practice as you play.
- Time your run so you can meet the ball perfectly. Standing in a single place won’t help anyone, as the defense can easily mark you.
