One of the most simple yet effective skills to master in soccer is the first touch in soccer. At first, the first touch doesn’t seem that important. Yet, as you have grown in your ability to play, the first touch is a key skill to get past defenders and prepare the ball for you to either pass, dribble, or shoot it.
To accomplish a good first touch, you need to use the inside of your foot. This allows you to have the most foot area to receive the ball. When the ball is traveling toward you, simply lift your foot so the inside is faced towards the ball. Then, when the ball arrives, cushion it by giving your leg just a bit. This keeps the ball in front of you without it bouncing away out of control.

- Make sure to look up and check your surroundings before the ball arrives. This allows you to understand where the defense is. Which can help you adjust your touch to what best suits the opportunity.
- Don’t be afraid to use other parts of your foot. The inside of your foot is the best way to receive the ball but using the outside and laces of the ball are good too. This is because the outside and laces can direct the ball in a different dissection that could be best for that particular situation. Just make sure you are comfortable receiving the ball in this manner.
- Prepare yourself for your second touch. Make sure you are on your toes as it can help you adjust to any unpredictable movements. Staying on the balls of your feet can help you get a jump on defenders, be more deceptive, and overall improve your movements and touches.
