A layoff pass in soccer is a simple pass that can set up a perfect shot or just maintain possession. The first player passes the ball to a player facing them, then, the player receiving the ball will tap the ball in a perfect position to either keep the position or allow the player to get a shot off.
There are many reasons why people use lay-off passes. Lay-off passes block the goalie’s view of the shot until the shot is already in the air and heading for the goal. Lay-off passes also confuse the defense because they expect the person who received the ball to turn and dribble themselves. The defenders will least expect the pass to go back to the person who passed it.
Be careful to communicate what you are going to do without giving it away to the other team. As you play longer together as a team, you will become more comfortable and can communicate without talking too much.
