This simple yet effective drill focuses on dribbling and passing the ball. It also tests a player’s awareness because before they receive the ball, they need to realize if they should pass or dribble or play the diagonal give and go. Be detailed while participating in this drill and focus on the key aspects. As you practice it more and more, you will become better at it and will be able to recognize similar situations in the game.
Supplies:
- 5 players
- Each player needs a ball
- 4 cones
Set up:
- Set up the cones so that they form a rectangle, two long sides, and two short sides.
- 3 players will go to 3 different cones and 2 players go to one cone.
- The cone with two players will start with the ball.
Instructions:
- The first player that starts with the ball will have 3 options.
- Pass the ball directly to the player opposite them on the long side, dribble along the short side, or pass the ball diagonally across the rectangle.
- If you pass the ball on the long side, run after the ball and chase your pass.
- If you pass on the diagonal, check-in towards the ball, receive it again, then pass it back to the same player once more.
- Finally, if you dribble, just stay at the cone you arrive at.
Tips:
- Try to pass and dribble with different feet to balance skill on your right and left feet.
- Work on your first touch. Set the ball in front of you but behind the cone. Remember, receive the ball across your body.
- To make the passes harder, try to chip the ball in the air. It requires more skill to pass and receive the ball.
