The star drill is a great drill to practice as a team. Everyone is able to work on their touch, shooting, and passing. It also helps train the goalkeeper. When doing the star drill, make sure everyone switches roles so that each player will get the opportunity to play in each role.
Supplies:
- About 6 balls
- 3 cones
- At least 7 players
Set up:
- Set up the drill by putting someone in goal.
- At least 1 player stands on each side of the goal.
- Place 3 cones to shape the top of a star. One at each corner of the 18-yard box and the other a little farther than the middle of the 18-yard box.
- At least one player goes to each cone.
- Start with 2 balls at each post and 2 balls at the top cone.
Instructions:
- The player from the right post will start by passing the ball to the player diagonal from them.
- This player will receive the ball with one touch and shoot with the next touch.
- Then, the player from the left post will pass it to the player diagonal from them.
- That player will also take a touch and shoot it.
- The player at the top of the box will go. They will set the ball, shoot and score with their next touch.
Tips:
- Make sure your first touch is a good one. Keep the ball close and set it in the right direction so you are able to shoot with your second touch.
- When shooting, keep your ankle locked and your head and toe down. This will generate the most power while keeping the ball from sailing over the goal.
- The player at the top of the box can dribble and skill to work on approaching the goal, beating a defender, and shooting.
- For the Keeper: If the drill is too easy, set up a cone in front of the goal. Then, run towards the cone and back to the goaline to save the ball.
